Boys and Girls All-conference announced

Posted in All Conference, Athletes, Boy's Basketball, Girl's Basketball, Posted by Bob | No Comments »

Here’s the article in the Sentinel.

Boys:
Brennan Olson (Luck)
Carson Giller (Luck)
Harry Severson (Luck)
Ben Larson (Grantsburg)
Trent Bonneville (Grantsburg)
Jason Jensen (Grantsburg)
Tyler Myers (Grantsburg)
Connar Goetz (Grantsburg)
Brady Flaherty (Unity)
Ryan Larson (SCF)
Gus Koecher (SCF)
Austin Elliott (Webster)

Honorable Mentions:
Charlie Brown (Siren)
Brennen Moose (Siren)
Zach Anderson (Frederic)
Ethan Cook (Frederic)
Cory Gephard (St. Croix Falls)

All five Grantsburg starters make All-conference… what an accomplishment! I don’t know if that has ever happened before (probably) but Grantsburg finished second in the conference. It shows that it was truly a team effort for those guys.

I feel like Siren sort of got snubbed with selections as they had a very good season and I thought that Charlie Brown definitely had a good enough season to warrant an All-conference selection.

 Girls:
Janey Emery (Siren)
Carley Emery (Siren)
Ashley Guevara (Siren)
Marissa Campeau (SCF)
Sarah Petznick (SCF)
Morgan Denny (Luck)
Taryn Pilz (Luck)
Rose Kopecky (Webster)
Michelle Gibbs (Webster)
Becca Milligan (Unity)
Becca Anderson (Frederic)
Kortney Morrin (Grantsburg).

Honorable mentions:
Meghan Baasch (Siren)
Jenny Benoy (SCF)
Megan Anderson (Frederic)
Gabrielle Witzany (Grantsburg)

I like the fact that Gab Witzany got an honorable mention. She had a good season and really played well at the end of the season.

I think the conference is going to be highly competitive for the next couple years as a lot of the players on this list are sophomores (Morrin, Carley Emery, Ashley Guevara, Michelle Gibbs) and Witzany is a freshman. I might have missed a couple younger players, but that would only strengthen my arguement.

Grantsburg girls fall short

Posted in Girl's Basketball, Posted by Bob | No Comments »

It was a weird kind of game between the Pirates (1-15, 1-9) and the Webster Tigers (8-10, 5-6).

Grantsburg was coming off their first victory of the season, a 60-38 drubbing of the Unity Eagles. Webster was also coming off a victory as they defeated Frederic 44-39 on Tuesday.

The game was tight for the first three quarters, most of the offensive credit for Grantsburg can be attributed to Sarah Wald. The junior was on fire in the first half scoring 13 of Grantsburg’s 17 points. She ended up fouling out early in the fourth quarter with 16 points (unofficially). She nailed four three pointers in the game.

Unfortunately, for purple fans, Kortney Morrin had a bad night from the floor as she only scored four points in the game (she averages over 20 per game). To her credit she never seemed upset about her lack of scoring and played quite well defensively, blocking several shots and getting a lot of rebounds.

The real story of the game was Reba Smallwood and her 18 points (all underneath except for two free throws). Smallwood was many times left wide open in the paint and was able to score at will for the Tigers. this was the demise of the Pirates as Smallwood and her sub Mary Johnson scored a total of 24 points inside with Rose Kopecky also having a nice night with 11 points.

The final score: Webster 49, Grantsburg 38.

Grantsburg hosts Amery on the tenth.

Girls first…

Here is a link to the archive of the girls radio broadcast.

Webster 57, Grantsburg 50

It looked like the Pirates were going to notch their first win of the season for a while tonight, but things just didn’t pan out for them as they drop to 0-8 on the season. Kortney Morrin had a great night shooting, unofficially I had her for 28 points.

Rose Kopecky from Webster had 26 and took over the game in the second half. I was also very impressed with Brittany Burrow’s defense… it seemed like she was everywhere causing havoc.

Boys…

Here is a link to the archive of the boys radio broadcast.

Grantsburg 66, Webster 32

This one was a little deceiving. It seemed like Webster was in it for most of the first half. They were only down 7 after the first quarter and 13 at half. But that trend continued and Grantsburg quietly and methodically blew Webster out.

Four players scored in double figures for the Pirates, led by Jason Jensen with 15. Every single player on the varsity roster scored at least one point.

Grantsburg remains undefeated as they improve their record to 7-0.

Grantsburg is ranked 8th in division 3, Luck is ranked 4th.
