The Pirates cruised through their own tournament on Saturday… the "closest" anyone came to taking a set from them was the Braham Bombers as they got within 9 points of winning. Think of that… nobody came within 10 points, on average, of beating the Pirates. Wow.

This Tuesday, the Pirates will be taking on Frederic for the third time this season. The first time was the first match of the year for the Purple and they came out strong, beating the Vikings in straight sets. The next time they met was on Saturday during the Grantsburg Invitational tournament and the Pirates took care of business winning the first two sets of the best of three.

Will the third time be the charm for Frederic? Probably not, unless the Pirates are too busy worrying about decorating their hallways and the big match against Luck on Thursday. This is the Pirates conference to lose at this point, having beat every team in it once. It's the second time through and the only blemish they gals in purple have is against the Luck Cardinals in which they dropped their only set of the year in set number three 20-25.

The Pirates are 11-0 and 28-1 in matches. Their average score? 25-13.

Softball all-conference announced

The Grantsburg Pirates are now 4-0 on the young season and are outscoring their opponents a combined 60-2 in those four games.

The baseball team also won,11-1 over Frederic and the Pirates remain undefeated at 5-0.

Saturday: Grantsburg Regional final in Osceola (or Siren in Spooner if the Pirate girls lose on Friday). This game has to potential to be Grantsburg vs. Webster if the Tigers can get by #1 seed Boyceville. Webster won in overtime in their game against Glenwood City on Tuesday night 62-56.

Not counting chickens quite yet…

The Pirates will wait to play until Friday, March 4th as a benefit of receiving a first round bye while Webster will host #6 Boyceville on Tuesday, March 1st.

Webster had their conference championship hopes dashed when they lost to Luck last Friday (31-22). Coincidentally, that loss also eliminated Grantsburg from contention and Luck will be the top team in the West Lakeland again this year. The Pirates host Luck this week in what is now a fairly meaningless game (somewhat like your second semester as a senior).

In other news:

Unity received a number one seed in D3 while St. Croix Falls nabbed a #6 seeding.

Luck got a #1 seed, Siren received a #2 seed and Frederic secured the #3 seed. All three teams are in the same region! That's some West Lakeland power!

All told the West Lakeland had THREE number one seeds, a number two, two number three seeds and a number six. That's a total of three first round byes and six first game home games.

Boys basketball brackets

Basketball season is well underway in the area and some interesting story lines are already developing in the West Lakeland.

Coming into the season on the boy's side I thought the top of the conference would be Luck and Grantsburg followed by Siren and Webster and I felt each of them had a legit shot at winning the conference. After a handful of conference games under their belts, it looks like I was mostly right. Webster has beaten Grantsburg, Siren has beaten Webster and Luck and Grantsburg have beaten Siren. And now you have to give Unity their props because they've beaten Luck and lost to Webster by two. Grantsburg beat them and they play Siren tomorrow night.

It's still anyone's conference.

The Siren girls have been dominant and have only one loss to conference foe, St. Croix Falls. It was a shocker to me that they lost, but talking to some others who know what SCF has, it shouldn't have been as big of an upset as I thought it was.

The Grantsburg girls have improved a lot this year compared to recent years and it looks like new head coach Adam Hale has brought some renewed energy to the team.

Basketball

God provided the rain while Kyle Johnson and Derek Bertelsen provided the thunder and lightning as the Grantsburg Pirates stormed off to a huge start and never looked back winning the level one playoff game 44-0 over the Elk Mound Mounders (8-2).

Kyle Johnson had 122 yards and two touchdowns. Derek Bertelsen had 290 with four touchdowns! Both running backs went over 1,000 yards on the season during tonight's game. Grantsburg QB Brent Myers didn't pass a single time, and didn't have to as the Pirates racked up nearly 450 yards on the ground.

The weather played a huge role in the game as the wind roared and the rain came in horizontally. The passing games were rendered moot, though Elk Mound gave it their best effort in the fourth quarter, it was not enough. I do feel bad for the Mounders as their game is balanced with both run and pass normally, but there was just no way they could get anything in the air. I think their QB was 3/7 for something like 61 yards. Tough night.

The game had to move to a different venue after the lights went out with under two minutes to go in the first half. We ended up relocating to Frederic to finish the game. The field was in really good shape considering there had already been a game played on it by the time we got there (Frederic won over Elmwood 39-0). The lights had gone out five times during that one. When we drove up to the town we could see the lights beckoning in the rainstorm, but when we got closer they had disappeared. They had lost the lights, again. It happened again at the end of the first half (1:17 later) and we had to wait 15 minutes for them to cycle back on. Thankfully that was the last time they went out and the game went off without any real problems (the scoreboard went out for a while, too, but came back on after a few minutes).

Kudos to Grantsburg Athletic Director, Mike Amundson, for some quick thinking to allow this game to finish tonight. Had it been postponed to tomorrow it would've caused many issues including Elk Mound having to go home then come back facing a 30-0 deficit and the fact that it is not legal to play two games within four days of each other so the next level game would've likely been moved to Monday.

Grantsburg will be traveling to Colby on Saturday for the level two game.

Grantsburg is one of 16 teams left in Division 5 [bracket] (incidentally, the Grantsburg volleyball team is also in the "sweet 16" [bracket]).

I will be writing more about this game and the fact that Grantsburg is the lone Large Lakeland team left standing after this crazy night later.

It's after one in the morning and I'm beat.

So a good showing from the West Lakeland as they go 8-3 in the first round with a set record of 26-10 (if you take out the Clayton/Frederic tilt the set record is 23-7).

Siren, Shell Lake and Frederic have been eliminated.
