Clayton ousted

Posted in General, Posted by Bob, State, Volleyball | No Comments »

Co-West-Lakelanders, the Clayton Bears, lost to McDonnell Central last night in straight sets.

The Bears were runners-up in last year’s playoffs, losing to Catholic Central in straight sets.

Congratulations to the Clayton Bears on a terrific season!

Grantsburg is now the only representative from the West Lakeland conference still alive in the tourney.

Regional championship preview

Posted in Posted by Bob, State, Volleyball | No Comments »

The Grantsburg volleyball team gets set to travel to Hammond, Wisconsin today to defend their regional championship for the 16th consecutive year.

They take on the St. Croix Central Panthers (7-2, 9-7 with six games unreported) from the Dunn-St. Croix conference.

Grantsburg coach Bill Morrin won his 800th match of his career last night by beating Prescott in straight sets. 800, people… that’s pretty dang good. I’ll write more about that acheivement in a later post and try to put it into some perspective. Congratulations, Coach Morrin! (thanks to Deb Johnson for giving me the heads-up on this one)

The Pirates have already defeated the Panthers this year 2 -0 during the Grantsburg tournament.

SCC defeated seventh seed Unity 3-1 last night to advance to tonight’s regional championship.

SCC lost earlier this year to Prescott (which Grantsburg solidly dispatched last night in straight sets) and Clayton (not a bad thing, but another common opponent for the two teams. Grantsburg beat Clayton easily during the conference season).

Grantsburg is 31-1 this year with only three set losses. Their set record is 76-3… there is nobody remotely close to that in all of Wisconsin womens’ volleyball.

The match starts at 7pm tonight and you can hear it on 105.7 WXCX.

West-Lakeland volleyball standings

The Pirates have won their conference 21 times in a row. That’s a crazy phenomenal stat. They finished this season undefeated in conference play and honestly, they were never challenged. Not even against division 4 state qualifiers, Clayton.

The Pirates are ranked number one again according to the Wissport.net poll. They remain number one in the WVCA poll as well.

The Pirates look like they’re ready for the post-season which starts next Tuesday and you can listen to every match on 105.7 WXCX. (If you’d like to advertise please call the station at 888.629.7575 – no, I don’t get a commission)

Here are the nearly final standings for the West Lakeland conference. Grantsburg still has the Cameron Tournament this weekend so the overall records will change, but the conference season is over.

Pirate Volleyball one step closer

Posted in Posted by Bob | No Comments »

Barring some kind of unforeseen shocker, the Grantsburg Pirates should have an easy road to their 21st consecutive conference championship. That’s because they defeated the Clayton Bears tonight three sets to none.

While Grantsburg seemed not to be hitting on all cylinders it was plenty to defeat the Bears (25-11, 25-18, 25-15).

I did not broadcast the game on the radio, but I did go and record the play-by-play. The radio station has decided (actually the managers decided) to forego any volleyball games and only do football games during the regular season. That’s why I did the game on my own so I am halfway ready for the playoffs when it is broadcast on the air.

So here is the match I did for my own benefit. I hope you enjoy it. (It’s my first time with a new recorder and I realize I am too close to the mic, but I’ll fix that next time. Thanks for cutting me some slack. Not to mention the rest of the rust I’m trying to break off.)

Grantsburg Volleyball still great

Posted in Posted by Bob, Volleyball, audio | No Comments »

The Pirate volleyball team is still going strong after an undefeated regular season and a second place state finish in 2008, the ladies are at it again winning and winning big.

Tonight (Tuesday, Sept. 8 ) is a big match against Clayton (Division 4 state qualifier). This match tonight will go a long way to determining the conference champion in the West Lakeland.

I am planning on going to the game, but it will not be broadcast on radio. I did purchase a digital voice recorder and will call the game and upload it to this website as soon as I can.

Unfortunately, the radio station doesn’t plan on covering any volleyball games this year until the playoffs, so if I can find some businesses to sponsor this site, I will call the games for WeAreGrantsburg.com.

Grantsburg wins Regional Championship

Congratulations to the Grantsburg Pirates. They won tonight 9-2 against the second seed Clayton/Turtle Lake team.

The Pirates advance to the Sectionals which will be held in Osseo-Fairchild next Tuesday. Their first game starts at 11am and should they win that one they will play at 5pm that evening. Their first game is against the Elk Mound Mounders (17-4 first place in the Dunn-St. Croix Conference). Bracket

The Grantsburg pitching was outstanding tonight as Jimmy Nelson and Nolan Hanson combined for eight strike outs in seven innings. The third inning was the only inning the Clayton/Turtle Lake squad got anything going and it was on the strength of a bloop hit to left and a high chopper in front of home plate. Both of those players came around to score that inning and that was it for them for the game.

I really appreciate the fans at the ballpark. They are very passionate about their home team and are per capita the loudest fans I think Grantsburg has.

Grantsburg is on a roll right now winning their eleventh game in a row (looks like I had a bad source in the previous post).

Congratulations and good luck!

Swine flu getting closer to Grantsburg

Posted in Fastpitch, General, Posted by Bob | No Comments »

According to this report in the St. Paul Pioneer Press and this one on the Sentinel’s website the school district of Clayton has closed school because of a probable H1N1 flu virus.

Personally, I think this has been a lot of noise about nothing, but a lot of people seem worried about it so I thought I’d pass the info along.

Enjoy the beautiful weather.

I’ll be broadcasting the Grantsburg/Webster tilt Tuesday night on WXCX 105.7, so tune in around five for the game.

Congrats to the Siren girls

The Siren Dragons won the sectional semi-final game tonight against Flambeau 61-50. Siren won 61-50 on very strong free throw shooting. I think I had them as 31/35 from the line. Super sophomore Carley Emery was 14/14!

The Falcons were defending Division 4 state champs and have knocked Siren out of the tournament for the past several years.

They play tomorrow night (Saturday) and will take on the Greenwood Indians who beat the Clayton Bears 35-32. Game time is 7:00 and you can hear it on 105.7, WXCX.

Congratulations to the Siren Dragons!

Grantsburg boys #1 seed all but locked up

Posted in Boy's Basketball, Posted by Bob, State | No Comments »

Looking at the teams in Grantsburg’s (16-2, 9-1) regional, it seems that the Pirates have the number one seed locked up. The next best team in the region is Glenwood City coming in with a 12-6 overall record. That means, even with a loss against Luck (17-1, 10-1) on Friday, the Pirates will still have a relatively easy regional bracket. Of course that’s not what’s on their minds right now. They’d love to get the conference title as well.

Luck is in the next region setting up a potentially great sectional matchup between the two conference rivals. Here’s a link to the projected D3 tournament rankings according to Wissports.net.

Grantsburg defeated a good non-conference foe, Clayton (14-3) 69-50 Tuesday night.
