The Grantsburg Pirates looked like the team I expected to see all this year. A fantastic effort by all in a 26-12 victory over the Cameron Comets.

The Pirates now raise their record to 2-4 overall, but more importantly 2-1 in the conference. That means the Conference is still on the table as well as a playoff berth. The Pirates would have to run the table for the conference championship, but with the way they performed tonight, it just might happen.

Cameron is a good team. They had some very well designed run plays off of the option look, but the Pirates defense was up to the task. I felt that the Cameron passing game could've been much better as they dropped four or five balls that would've been big plays.

Overall I'm very impressed because the Pirates were playing without several key players but still performed very well in this homecoming game. I'm guessing the dance tonight will be a blast for those guys.

An impressive Homecoming victory

Another regional championship is in the books for Grantsburg. They beat Cameron 9-3 on Thursday night to stay perfect on the season, 20-0.

Cameron was a spirited team with good fundamentals and they took advantage of a couple Grantsburg mistakes early in the game. Grantsburg trailed early in the game but eventually pulled away late to win it in seven innings. By the way… it was the first time all year that Grantsburg trailed in a game. It lasted half an inning.

This was only the second time all year Grantsburg was forced to go all seven (there's a ten run rule after five innings). Cameron fell to 19-2 on the season.

Grantsburg will be traveling to Hurley on Tuesday game time is 5pm. We're trying to figure out how to broadcast their game and also get the baseball games on the air as the Grantsburg baseball team has also advanced to Sectionals and plays in Osseo at 11am that Thursday and if they win they play again at 5pm.

Grantsburg fast pitch regional champs again!

Overall it was a nice team win for the Pirates.

Early in the game it looked like it was going to be a struggle as the Pirates were just not getting that clutch hit, leaving several base runners in scoring position through the first four innings. But the fifth inning saw Gavin Meyer go WWWWWAAAAAYYY deep to left center for a two run home run and that was a huge lift to the Pirates and carried them on to a victory. They added two more in the bottom of the sixth on a two run error with two outs and runners on second and third. It was a routine pop-up to the pitcher who came off the mound and near the first base line, but saw the ball pop out of his glove and his throw home was too late to get the second runner. I felt bad for the kid who was pitching in relief in the sixth.
 

The Pirates play at 11am in Osseo for their sectional semifinal and if they win they'll stay there and play at five. As of this post, their opponent is unknown. [BRACKET]

A possible conflict… if the Pirate softball team wins tomorrow night they will also play the following Tuesday in Hurley, which is about seven miles south of the north pole, so it will be very difficult to get to both games. This has happened in the past, but not with so much ground to cover between the games.

Grantsburg vs. Cameron Regional Final Live Stream

The baseball team scored six runs in the second inning and that was enough to beat the Chetek/Weyerhauser 7-5. Jimmy Nelson got the win and Jacob Glover took over in the fifth and did a pretty good job.

Trevor Thompson takes the hill today against the Cameron Comets who beat Clayton/Turtle Lake last night 3-2.

The softball team fared well again, beating Clayton/Turtle Lake 12-0 in five innings. Stacey McKenzie and Gabby Witzany went yard and the girls face off against Cameron on Thursday… this one could be the toughest game of the year for the Pirates.

Grantsburg ball teams 2-0 in tournament

While rankings don't always tell the whole story of a team, it is a nice accolade for the team. The Pirates are 14-0 and have secured at least a tie for the conference championship.

They are one of only two baseball teams in the state that remain undefeated.

They are playing good fundamental baseball and have solid pitching which has gotten them to this point. They have outscored their opponents this year 139-35. They have a couple late-game come from behind wins against St. Croix Falls and more recently the Cameron Comets.

They play Braham (MN) tonight and that could be one of their biggest tests of the year as the Bombers are 11-1. You can hear that game on 105.7 WXCX or online at www.redrockonair.com. Game starts at 5pm.

Grantsburg baseball ranked #1

The Pirates beat Elk Mound 44-0 in easily the craziest game I've ever witnessed. (You can read this post about the nature of craziness).

Other teams did not fare as well. The biggest shocker was that undefeated Clear Lake lost, but they are also a passing team and the weather took away half their game (presumably).

Grantsburg football sole Large Lakeland survivor

Here's hoping it's another epic battle like last year (with the same results) between these rivals.

The match is in Webster on Thursday, so make it up there if you are physically able to… it's gonna be wild.

It’s Washburn

The Webster Tigers gave it everything they had but came up short against the powerhouse that is the Grantsburg Pirates. The Pirates won in straight sets (25 – 12,13,10).

Grantsburg started the first game with a 16-0 lead on the strong serving of Lauren Finch, but Webster outscored them from there on.

In the second game the Tigers were within one at 10-9 but then the Pirates poured it on.

The third game was all Grantsburg.

I really liked the way the Tigers played but they were just unable to put an entire game together. I am a huge fan of Michelle Gibbs on that Webster team… she is a great athlete and an awesome person. It's sorta sad to see her season end, along with all those very likable girls from Webster. Congratulations, Webster on a fine season… can't wait to see you in basketball this year!

The Pirates take on the winner of the Washburn/Cameron match in the sectional semi-finals.

• Regis had their hands full with Mondovi in the semi-final, but still won in straight sets.
• Regis is ranked #4 in D3, Colfax is unranked.
• Regis is 38-1. Their lone loss was to Anoka (MN).
• Regis' set record is pretty gaudy, too: 88-9.
• Colfax won the Dunn-St. Croix conference with a 9-0 conference record.
• Colfax is 18-14 overall with a set record of 58-38.
• Prediction: Regis wins 3-1.
  

#1 Racine-St. Catherines vs. #2 Shoreland Lutheran

• RSC is the only other undefeated team in the state of Wisconsin (with Grantsburg).
• RSC is 37-0 with a set record of 84-4.
• They demolished their opening round opponent (25 – 1,3,3)
• They won their second round match without much trouble as well.
• They have already beaten Shoreland Lutheran 2-0 one week ago.
• Shoreland Lutheran is 16-9 on the year and finished third in the same conference as RSC.
• Grantsburg and RSC would match up in the state championship match. Wouldn't that be awesome!?!
• Prediction: RSC wins 3-0.
  

Here's an interesting tidbit… no number one seeds in the state have lost yet. I'm thinking that definitely changes tonight. Of the four games I've outlined here I predicted the number one seed moving on. I think the only one in question is the Cameron/Washburn match. I kinda wanted to pick Cameron, but I also know Washburn comes to play in the tourney. Should be fun!
