#1 Grantsburg hosts Frederic VB

The Grantsburg Pirates seem to be rolling right now as they're off to a great 11-0 start, which has earned them the top spot on the newly announced WVCA's Division 3 rankings. Jay Messar from wissports.net wrote a little bit about the rankings… loved his "burg" line… click on the link to read what he said.

The Pirates cruised through their own tournament on Saturday… the "closest" anyone came to taking a set from them was the Braham Bombers as they got within 9 points of winning. Think of that… nobody came within 10 points, on average, of beating the Pirates. Wow.

This Tuesday, the Pirates will be taking on Frederic for the third time this season. The first time was the first match of the year for the Purple and they came out strong, beating the Vikings in straight sets. The next time they met was on Saturday during the Grantsburg Invitational tournament and the Pirates took care of business winning the first two sets of the best of three.

Will the third time be the charm for Frederic? Probably not, unless the Pirates are too busy worrying about decorating their hallways and the big match against Luck on Thursday. This is the Pirates conference to lose at this point, having beat every team in it once. It's the second time through and the only blemish they gals in purple have is against the Luck Cardinals in which they dropped their only set of the year in set number three 20-25.

The Pirates are 11-0 and 28-1 in matches. Their average score? 25-13.

Grantsburg tourney schedule set

The undefeated Grantsburg volleyball team is hosting their annual tournament this Saturday. The varsity tourney begins at 10 a.m. and is a round robin format. The final match is scheduled for 4:30. We'll be there as much as possible to cover the games. Here's Grantsburg's schedule:

10:00 Grantsburg vs. Webster (3-3)

11:55 Grantsburg vs. New Richmond (3-7)

12:50 Grantsburg vs. Frederic (2-3)

2:40 Grantsburg vs. Northwood (1-3)

4:30 Grantsburg vs. Braham (3-3)

I anticipate that we will broadcast all but the Frederic match because I'll be covering the wiener dog races at Grantoberfest! What a busy and fun time we'll have this Saturday!

Grantsburg tourney schedule set

Grantsburg baseball ranked #1

The Grantsburg Pirate baseball team has received the number one ranking from the Wisconsin Baseball Coaches Association this week. They had been ranked third last week.

While rankings don't always tell the whole story of a team, it is a nice accolade for the team. The Pirates are 14-0 and have secured at least a tie for the conference championship.

They are one of only two baseball teams in the state that remain undefeated.

They are playing good fundamental baseball and have solid pitching which has gotten them to this point. They have outscored their opponents this year 139-35. They have a couple late-game come from behind wins against St. Croix Falls and more recently the Cameron Comets.

They play Braham (MN) tonight and that could be one of their biggest tests of the year as the Bombers are 11-1. You can hear that game on 105.7 WXCX or online at www.redrockonair.com. Game starts at 5pm.

Well a new season is upon us and the schedule is out for December. We'll be doing a lot more hockey this year, which is exciting to me because there are rarely 30 point blowouts in hockey

Boys lose for the first time this season

The Grantsburg boys travelled to Braham, Minnesota for a non-conference game on Saturday night. This series was born about four years ago and Grantsburg has not one any of the games. That didn’t change.

I did not call the game nor was I there, so I only have a final score to report to you. It was a nine point victory for the Bombers 70-61.

The Pirates next game is on Tuesday in Siren in double header fashion. The boys play first (6:00). The boys are now 8-1 overall on the season.

Preview: Pine City @ Grantsburg girls basketball

A game that will feature two struggling girls teams. Grantsburg (0-9, 0-5) hosts Pine City (3-8, 2-2).

Can Grantsburg finally get that first elusive win? They were beaten in their last game 70-57 in Frederic. The game prior they lost to Webster by seven points and led after the first half.

Grantsburg’s defense needs to improve for them to have a chance to win a few games in January. They have given up a LOT of points including 95 to Ladysmith and 86 to Braham.
