Post season honors for volleyballers

Once again the Grantsburg Volleyball team is honored with a bunch of post season awards. While I'm sure each of them would say they'd give their award back for a state championship ball, it is important to highlight individuals who have given so much effort and time to their craft. I think the parents should also be congratulated when an athlete gets an honor because the All-conference or all-state or whatever isn't won on game day, on the contrary, it's won in the hours of practice, the miles of running, the weights lifted and determination in the off-season that wins these things.

So congratulations to all-conference players:

Gabby Witzany, sr.

Sam Schweiger, jr.

Kylie Pewe, jr.

Also, congratulations to Carly Larson who was identified as a member of the Division 3 All State Tournament Team (one of six players from the four D3 state tournament teams) and an All-State Honorable Mention (chosen among players across the state from all four divisions).

Thank you to first year head coach, Deb Allaman-Johnson whose effort, dedication and performance in her first year would rival the best coaches, past or present.

Pirates play their hearts out, but fall short

It was a really fun match to watch, but the Pirates end up coming short losing the State Semi-final match 3 games to 2 to the Spencer Rockets. The two games the Pirates won they dominated winning by twelve and thirteen points in games two and four. Unfortunately, they couldn't use some of those excess points in the other ones as the three games they lost they did by three points including game number five, 15-12.

It was a successful season no matter how you look at it. Deb Allaman-Johnson picked right up where Bill Morrin left off. The girls reacted well and in my opinion really came together in the second game of the Fall Creek match.

The Pirates made some mental mistakes in this match and that will haunt the individuals for a while, but I hope they can see the big picture soon and realize that what they have accomplished this year is remarkable and that THEY have made their own unique stamp on the Grantsburg volleyball dynasty.

Spencer Rockets Preview

Grantsburg's opponent on Friday in the state semi-finals will be the Spencer Rockets. The Rockets finished second to the Owen-Withee Blackhawks in the Cloverbelt East conference.

Their overall record is 32-7. They beat Kewaunee in five sets in the sectional final match.

They have losses to Park Falls (whom the Pirates beat in the sectional semi-final match 3-1), Owen-Withee (who has made the state finals in D4), twice to McDonell Central (38-10), Auburndale (whom the Rockets then beat in the WIAA Tournament), Waupaca (D2), and Mosinee (26-11).

They seem to have a very solid middle game, much like Eau Claire Regis. They have a senior with 1000 career kills. Her name is Courtney Schultz. She is a 6-2 middle hitter. (Click here for video). Just from that video she reminds me a lot of Regis' Heather Bowe, who, while certainly not shut down by the Pirates, definitely had her game altered by a stalwart middle block from Grantsburg.

Spencer had not been to the Sectional round since 1983 (see the awesome header picture… love the accomplishment and excitement of the team and it's fans!) and this is their first time to the state championships since 1974. The Pirates haven't NOT been to Sectionals since 1993. That, combined with the fact that this is Grantsburg's fourth trip in four years to State, the experience factor clearly favors the Pirates.

In the Tournament the Pirates are 15-1 in sets, the Rockets are 15-5. The average score of Pirate set is 24.875 to 14.3. The average score for the Rockets (omitting their two game five victories as to not skew the results) 23.67 to 18.72. Average victory margin for the Pirates is 10.5 points while the Rockets is about five points. This really doesn't mean much, but I like stats.

The community is invited to an all-school pep session at the High School to send the state-bound Pirate volleyball team on their way to Green Bay. If you haven't been to a Grantsburg pep session, you are really missing out!

The party starts at 8:18 and usually goes around half an hour.

Come cheer on the Pirates before they shove off to their fourth consecutive trip to the Resch Center in Green Bay!

What a match between the Grantsburg Pirates and the Eau Claire Regis Ramblers tonight from Clear Lake. With a trip to the Resch Center in Green Bay on the line, both teams came to play.

It was back and forth all night long with Grantsburg winning in straight sets, but don't let that fool you, these two teams gave us some unbelievable volleyball… maybe the best I've ever witnessed in a high school setting.

We'll have more on the match, State and opponents as the week moves forward, but until then, WAY TO GO PIRATES!!!

Grantsburg to face Eau Claire Regis

It's a rematch of last year's Sectional Final as the Grantsburg Pirates (31-1, West Lakeland champs) will be taking on the Eau Claire Regis Ramblers (31-6, Cloverbelt champs). In last year's contest the Pirates took control early and beat Regis in straight sets. This year should be exciting. The last time Grantsburg didn't make it to state was 2007, that year it was Regis representing this section at the Resch Center in Green Bay.

The Pirates are ranked number one in the state according to the WVCA, Regis is ranked seventh (but they just beat 6th ranked Washburn).

Regis has at least one dominant player. Heather Bowe is her name and she gave the Pirates some trouble last year, but this year, with more experience, she could be a deciding factor in the match on Saturday night from Clear Lake. She's also a basketball standout and has committed to play for the Badgers next winter.
