WXCX Playoff Schedule

Posted in Girl's Basketball, Posted by Bob, Radio | No Comments »

Here's my schedule for the rest of the week…

Wednesday – Church night… kids- go to youth group or confirmation.

Thursday – Siren hosts Drummond… tries to get retribution for those pesky Drummond boys always knocking the Dragon boys out of the tourney (since 2007).

Friday- The Webster Tigers look to get by their nemesis, Eau Claire Regis in the Sectional Semi-Final. Do the Tigers have it in them to make an improbable run to Madison?

Saturday – Could be two games, or could be zero games. We'll follow Siren girls and Webster boys as far as they'll take us!

Good luck to our area teams!!!

Tune into 105.7 WXCX to get the games.

Grantsburg wins

Posted in Posted by Bob, Radio, Volleyball | No Comments »

The Pirates have made it to the championship game for the second year in a row.

The girls dispatched the Laconia Spartans in straight sets (25-19, 25-9, 25-16).

Here is the stat sheet from the state semi-final.

Grantsburg will play Cuba City tomorrow at 12:30. Listen to the game on 105.7 WXCX!

Correction

I falsely assumed that the Championship match would be available at wiaa.tv. Unfortunately, it will not be shown there… only the semi-final match on Friday (1:00 pm) will be available online.

You can, however, listen to both matches on 105.7 WXCX. The match on Saturday starts at 12:30.

Also… I’m not sure how well I’ll be able to update this blog while I’m in Green Bay… hopefully it won’t be a problem, but in case there is there are a few websites that will provide you with a lot of info.

Kudos to my radio station

My radio station (105.7 WXCX) is a good one. The station manager, Mike Hughes is also a good one.

Mike Hughes, WXCX Station Manager

Money is tight everywhere including the radio station. In fact, there won’t be much of a profit made (if any) during this state volleyball trip to Green Bay this weekend. My modest payment plus travel expenses (food, lodging, and 50.5 cents per mile)  plus a $100/match broadcasting fee to the WIAA will take a big chunk of what our station brings in.

He’s even popping an extra $75 for a land line instead of a cell phone because the sound quality is better. $75 is quite a bit in the whole scheme of things (it’s more than my per match payment).

This is not a case of an employee kissing up, but a genuine thank you to him and our station for letting us cover local sports even if it means we don’t make anything on it.

Everyone likes an ‘atta boy so if you’d like to email him here’s his address, but I bet he’d also like you to visit the businesses that buy ad space and let them know you heard their ad during the volleyball matches.

How to catch Grantsburg at state

Posted in Posted by Bob, Radio, State, Volleyball | No Comments »

If you are unable to make the trek to Green Bay this weekend, fear not. There are a couple options for you.

1. Listen to me on 105.7 WXCX to get my completely unbiased (yeah, right) call of the game.

2. Log in to www.wiaa.tv to watch the match(es). I believe they also archive the matches so you can go back and watch again if you’d like (I’m not 100% sure about the archiving thing, but I think I’m right). Important correction… the championship match will not be streamed online. Sorry if this caused you any confusion.

3. Call someone with a radio and have them place the phone up against the speaker and listen that way.

Unfortunately, the radio station is not able to stream the audio live.

Also, WIAA rules stipulate that I would have to pay $90/match to put the audio up on this website, therefore I won’t be doing that. It doesn’t say anything about private use, so I am going to record the broadcast and make it available to anyone who would like it. Please email me to let me know if you’d like it.

Pep rally and fan bus info

Posted in Events, Posted by Bob, Radio, Volleyball | No Comments »

Hey all you Pirate supporters here are a couple things you might want to consider…

Thursday morning at 8:30 there will be a pep session for the state-bound volleyball team. These pep rallies are always very well done and are fun to go to. The public is more than welcome to attend.

There will be a fan bus (or two?) leaving Grantsburg Friday morning. Check with the high school office for departure times and prices.

Tickets to the state tournament are $8.00 and will be available at the high school office starting at 8:00 am Monday morning.

Grantsburg’s first match from the Resch Center in Green Bay will be Friday, November 6th at 1:00 pm. If you cannot make it over to the city by the bay please tune in to 105.7 WXCX. I also know the WIAA will stream video from the match and I’ll get that website to you in a different post.

Way to go Pirates!!!

V-ball set to make a run

Posted in Posted by Bob, Radio, Volleyball | No Comments »

Tonight the real season starts for the Grantsburg (29-1, 70-3 in sets) volleyball team.

Grantsburg finished second in the state last year, making it all the way to the championship game and losing to an incredible Wisconsin Heights volleyball team.

From the second the last point hit the ground in that match all thoughts turned to this year and how Grantsburg would be poised to make a serious run at the gold ball.

Grantsburg’s only set losses came at the hands of Hayward (ranked 8th in division 2 with a 29-1 record. Hayward’s lone loss was courtesy of Grantsburg in the championship game of the Ashland tournament. Here’s a blip I wrote about that situation.).

The Pirates take on Glenwood City tonight (the only record I found for them was 0-7 with a whole bunch of unreported scores. Their school’s website was not helpful at all, unlike Grantsburg’s). The Hilltoppers probably look at this game as their last of the season. There is no way Grantsburg loses tonight.

You can hear the match on 105.7 WXCX. First serve is at 7:30.

Only four teams in the state of Wisconsin will be able to say they won their final match of the year. Here’s some confident hope that the Pirates will be one of them.

Luck downs Pirate ship 33-14

Posted in Football, Posted by Bob, Radio, audio | No Comments »

There were moments in the Luck vs. Grantsburg tilt that gave Pirate fans hope that the worst is behind them.

Grantsburg was able to move the ball fairly well against a very athletic and well coached Cardinal team. The problem for the Pirates were turnovers. The Pirates coughed the ball up several times, losing a couple. They also threw two interceptions.

Had Grantsburg been able to hang on to the ball tonight the score would not be as lopsided as it seems. I think Luck was definitely the better team tonight, but I don’t think the Pirates are that far from getting their first win of the season either.

If you missed the broadcast you can listen to it right here on We Are Grantsburg. Go ahead.

Here’s my postgame interview with Coach Keith Lehne.
