Grantsburg and Siren split

The boys went first in a West Lakeland rivalry game and the Siren guys prevailed 63-51, staying undefeated on the season and sweeping the series this year over the Pirates. The Dragons are ranked fifth in Division five and are the only undefeateds in that division. Grantsburg suffers their fourth loss of the season and fall to 6-3 in the conference.

The girls game went the way of the Pirates, even with the "retirement" (read: early graduation) of Liz Gaffney recently and a pregame ankle injury to starter Kylie Pewe. The Pirates seem to have some things figured out, especially after a disappointing showing the last time these to met back in December when Siren won by double digits. This time the Pirates won 58-47.

The boys won 67-45, the girls lost 75-46 tonight in Grantsburg,

The boys started a little slow, but eventually found their rhythm as the twin towers, Seth Coy and David Ohnstad, had their way in the paint tonight combining for 27 of the 67 points. Daniel Biorn had 10 while three players, Brady Thompson, Connor Myers and Nolan Hanson, had eight.

In the girls game it looked like the Pirates were going to make a game of it, coming back from 15 down in the second quarter to cut the lead to just one by halftime. After the half, though, it was all SCF as they blew out the Pirates 42-14 in second half scoring.

It was much closer than the final score indicated, but the Pirates drop this one 42-34. Sam Schweiger came out of the game after getting poked in the eye and after that the defense struggled a little bit and the Tigers were able to pull away.

The Tigers led 21-20 at halftime and 29-28 at the end of the third quarter.

Our next broadcast will be after Christmas at the Webster Holiday tournament.

Well, that didn't go as we had expected. Both the boys and girls Pirate basketball teams came up short against two more than solid Siren basketball teams.

The Dragon girls won 50-30 and the Dragon guys won 62-51.

It's a double header tonight from Siren and it could go a long way in determining who the conference champs will be.

The boys game is the marquee matchup, but the girls game is just as exciting as the Pirate gals try to dethrone the Dragons.

Whoever wins the boys game will have the clear cut advantage in the chase for the conference crown.

Pirates sweep at home

The Grantsburg (2-0, 1-0) girls played first tonight and did a great job on Luck's (0-2, 0-1) big time player, Avery Steen, holding her to only 10 points on the night. On a side note… I LOVE the way Avery plays ball. I've seen her play a lot of basketball and some softball and I just love her intensity. Grantsburg won 50-30.

The Grantsburg boys (3-0, 2-0) had another tough time getting traction in the first half as they trailed 24-22 at halftime. They figured things out though… especially Daniel Biorn. He went for an unofficial 29 points and they were clutch points down the stretch. Brady Thompson had a nice game off the bench as well as Grantsburg went on to win 59-47 over the Luck Cardinals (1-3, 0-2).

With a lot of my focus and time being put into prepping for the Grantsburg state stuff, I would be remiss if I didn't at least say good luck to the Siren Dragon girls team.

They head to Sectionals tonight and play Mellen (who actually lost to South Shore last week, but South Shore had a scheduled band trip and had to forfeit the game to Mellen, thus Mellen advances to play Siren tonight).

If the Dragons win tonight and the Pirates lose, I'll be there for the Sectional Championship game in Spooner on Saturday to broadcast the game.

Grantsburg girls season ends

With all the excitement and hoopla surrounding the boys making it to state I forgot to talk about the girls' season coming to an end in the Regional Final against Boyceville. The Bulldogs proved to be too much for the Pirates in that game downing the ship 49-26.

The loss does not throw any kind of water on the season that the Pirates had this year. They overachieved in my book. They finished 15-8 after finishing the past three years with a combined 13 wins. Not bad.

A lot of credit has to be given to first year head coach, Adam Hale. He was also an assistant football coach this past year when Grantsburg made a nice run in the playoffs.

Congratulations to the girls team that did very well this year. Will next year be the year they get back to sectionals? They've only been there ONCE in the history of the world (1986, to be exact). I believe that it will happen.

Big day for Grantsburg on Saturday

The Grantsburg boys and girls both will play tomorrow (Saturday) in a couple championship games. The girls won tonight and while it was ugly, it was still was a win over Spring Valley 49-34. Grantsburg will take on Boyceville at 7pm in Osceola for the Regional Championship.

The Grantsburg boys already secured a game tomorrow with a win over Phillips last night. They will take on Colfax at 1pm in Chippewa Falls.

Both games will be broadcast on 105.7 WXCX and streamed online on the streaming tab above or on redrockonair.com.
