Grantsburg All-Conference football announced

The Pirates battled an unbelievable number of injuries which probably kept them from acheiving their full potential this year. But give them and the coaching staff heaps of credit as they were able to fill the holes and disguise the weaknesses well enough to get into the playoffs for the second straight year. And don't forget, they were just one win away from winning the conference championship.

Good season, Pirates!

The volleyball game (assuming Grantsburg gets by SCF tonight) starts at 7pm. 

Thus, we have to make a decision which worthy team we will be covering with the broadcast that day/night.

After much thought I've decided to broadcast the volleyball match and one of my reasons is because WXCX is covering the football game. My number one reason for doing this website is to make sure our sports teams get covered. So in my mind it wouldn't make much sense for me to double the efforts of the very capable Steve Linzmeier while leaving the incredible volleyball team wondering where all the love went.

So for the football game tune into 105.7 at 2pm for the call. I believe they will also stream it at www.redrockonair.com. I know I will be listening.

Saturday

Well, the WIAA wheel keeps a'turnin'. The Pirate football team was all set to play the #4 seeded Cumberland Beavers on Friday. A nice easy drive for the team and fans. Now they are heading just outside of Wausau to take on the now #4 seeded Stratford Tigers (6-3, 6-2) (Cumberland was bumped up to #3).

The Tigers are a Wisconsin football powerhouse as Division 6 State Champs from 2003-2008. The past two years have been a little down for that squad (6-4 in 2009, and 8-3 in 2010).

There's a chance that they'll schedule this game for Saturday (*see update at top of the post), but that's also an ACT testing day for the Grantsburg Juniors. It might make sense considering the distance having to be travelled, though, to have those guys reschedule their tests. After all, how alert are they going to be after spending all night on a school bus, getting home around two in the morning and then having to get up to go to the testing site. It's a lot to ask.

You could look at this and complain about the distance but that wouldn't do much good. So, we might as well get excited about playing a very storied team and also be excited that despite having the worst W/L record in this region, but we're facing off against the number four seed. If it were laid out in terms of 1 versus 8, we'd be traveling close to the same distance to face Colby, the team that beat us last year and finished second in state and a team who could probably beat the Minnesota Vikings, three times out of four.

Also, the official brackets have not come out. I'm thinking this should do it for divisions 3-7, but who knows, I thought that last night, too.

We should also congratulate the Siren Dragons making it to the playoffs in Division Seven! It has been a very long time since that's happened, so congrats to those guys. Also, congratulations to the Frederic Viking football team. They earned a number one seed in Division 7, meaning that if they win and Siren wins Siren will have to go all the way to Frederic for the second round! [BRACKET]

What’s a Stratford? *Updated*

The Beavers are 7-2 and finished tied for second in the Heart O' the North Conferenec and are the fourth seed in the region. The Pirates finished 4-5. These two teams played earlier this season. Cumberland won 46-22.

You can hear and see the game live on Friday night. Game starts at 7pm.

Grantsburg to play Cumberland on Friday. Maybe.

The Pirate athletes should take a breath today and realize that they've accomplished some very cool things.

The Volleyball team won their 23rd consecutive conference championships.

The Boys Cross-Country team won their conference in a landslide.

The Football team came within one game of winning the conference, but have to settle for second. But after starting the season 0-3 then 1-4, they've really rebounded and have a chance to make some noise in the playoffs.

Congratulations to all the Grantsburg athletes, coaches, parents and fans and good luck in the post-season!!!

High Five

Grantsburg is 4-4, but 4-1 in the conference, losing only to St. Croix Falls. The Saints' only loss was to Cameron who has two conference losses and is not in contention. The Unity Eagles were soaring above the pack early but have drifted to the middle of the pack and that's who the Pirates play tonight.

It could be a tough game, but rumor has it that the star player for Unity, Xavier Foeller, is out for this game (did you see his sick game winning shot over St. Croix Falls last year? Click here. Or here for a different angle).

The Eagles will be playing with their backs against the wall because if they win they'll have secured themselves a playoff berth, but if they lose they're on the bubble.

Of course the Pirates are thinking about a conference championship. Of course St. Croix beat them earlier this year so technically the Saints would be the number one team (but we don't point that kind of stuff out unless it's pro-Pirates).

Conference championship on the line

The Eagles are now 4-4, 3-2 in the Large Lakeland, but have lost their final three games, including last Friday to last place Webster. Grantsburg has won their last three and four out of the last five.

Should the Pirates get the win they will be no worse than tied for first pending the outcome of the St. Croix Falls vs. Clear Lake game in which I expect SCF to win, but I wouldn't bet a Snickers bar on it.

The game is this Thursday and will be covered right here on We are Grantsburg starting at 6:30.
