Belated XC post

The Boys' Cross Country team gets the attention it deserves on Sunday at 3pm at the Grantsburg High School. A welcome home rally will be held and the community is invited to join in congratulating the team for an incredible run (pun intended) this year… ending in a state runners-up trophy (when the puns start rolling, it's best not to stop them, even if it's essentially the same pun).

I know there was some adversity at the very end for the team, but they were able to battle through and have an incredible showing at the State Meet. It is really incredible the way they dominated the regular season and post season. The top team was pretty unbelievable (rumor has it they were using invisible jet packs), but Grantsburg finished well ahead of the third place team. Congratulations, Pirates!!! Also, congratulations to Webster's Joey Erickson with a ninth place finish!

Cross Country state delayed

The Pirates are ranked right behind Darlington with a team time of just 30 seconds behind the number one Redbirds. Behind the Pirates in a distant third is Kenosha St. Joseph which trails Grantsburg by about two and a half minutes.

Of course I really have no idea how that is true because when I look at the official WIAA lane assignment thingee [click here to look at it, too], it shows that Grantsburg is by far the best team with four runners running sub-seventeen minute races. Compare that with Darlington and they have just one. I guess I must be missing something. Probably has to do with different courses and such and who knows what numbers the coaches are putting in there? Is it each guys' personal best or something? I don't know, but then again, cross country eludes me as a whole anyway. 

That's not to say I don't appreciate them, because I do. Probably more than any other thing I cover. Mainly because I can't do it. What I mean is, I can throw a football, spike a volleyball and shoot a jump shot. I cannot run long distance. I'm definitely the guy you want with you if a bear is chasing you. So even though I don't understand what makes XCers tick, I can definitely appreciate the effort.

Grantsburg one of the favorites at state

It wasn't even a contest as the Pirates blew away the competition. The seven Pirate runners finished in the top 23 (out of 75) and had numbers 3-6, 11, 12 and 23. A total of 29 points (first five across added together). I heard one rumor that every single runner had personal records today! Kind of a good time for that to happen!

The team finished in the middle of the pack last year at state. I'm thinking a different outcome is likely this year.

The Championship meet will be held on Saturday, Oct. 29 at the Ridges Golf Course in Wisconsin Rapids.

Boys CC heading to State!

The Pirate athletes should take a breath today and realize that they've accomplished some very cool things.

The Volleyball team won their 23rd consecutive conference championships.

The Boys Cross-Country team won their conference in a landslide.

The Football team came within one game of winning the conference, but have to settle for second. But after starting the season 0-3 then 1-4, they've really rebounded and have a chance to make some noise in the playoffs.

Congratulations to all the Grantsburg athletes, coaches, parents and fans and good luck in the post-season!!!

I’m over it

The boys Cross Country team finished 8th out of 16 today at State while Angela Gaffney finished 42 out of 147. [ Results ]

The football team played in it's last game of the year as they were beaten soundly by the Colby Hornets, the number one team in the state 42-0. [ bracket ] [ AUDIO ]

The volleyball team ended the day on a great note as they swept Eau Claire Regis 3-0 (25- 17, 12, 18) to move on to State for the third time in three years. [ bracket ] [ AUDIO ] Grantsburg will play Wisconsin Heights on Friday at 1pm in Green Bay. If you want tickets you can get them Monday morning in the High School office. Also, there is a pep rally Thursday morning at 8:30… the public is invited to attend.

I will write more tomorrow.
