Post season honors for volleyballers

Once again the Grantsburg Volleyball team is honored with a bunch of post season awards. While I'm sure each of them would say they'd give their award back for a state championship ball, it is important to highlight individuals who have given so much effort and time to their craft. I think the parents should also be congratulated when an athlete gets an honor because the All-conference or all-state or whatever isn't won on game day, on the contrary, it's won in the hours of practice, the miles of running, the weights lifted and determination in the off-season that wins these things.

So congratulations to all-conference players:

Also, congratulations to Carly Larson who was identified as a member of the Division 3 All State Tournament Team (one of six players from the four D3 state tournament teams) and an All-State Honorable Mention (chosen among players across the state from all four divisions).

Thank you to first year head coach, Deb Allaman-Johnson whose effort, dedication and performance in her first year would rival the best coaches, past or present.

Softball all-conference announced

Softball finishes* 18-0

They've done it again. The Grantsburg fast pitch team has finished the season with an unblemished mark after defeating the Siren/Webster team tonight in five innings 14-0.

They've not only done it, but they've done it BIG!

They've outscored their opponents 262-18…

Played a full game (7 innings) just once, the rest were 10-run rule games…

Shut out opponents 10 times…

Gave up just one run 4 times…

One of only four undefeated high school fastpitch teams in the state Wisconsin…

They have the highest team batting average (.462) in team history…

They have the most home runs (8) in team history…

They have four pitchers who have combined for the stats listed above (with some help from a very good defense)…

Kylie Pewe has a .643 batting average. .643! That's going to beat the all time team record set in 2010 (.610) by, um, her.

And they have the funkiest website in America…

They have accomplished this run with an unorthodox approach to pitching, if you've seen the games then you'll know what I'm talking about.

Are they a shoe-in for state? No. Do they have a chance? You better believe it!

As we learned last year, there are no "for sure's" in this game… except that girl from Arcadia was "for sure" out at home… but I digress….

Its another great season put out there by the Pirate gals and they're so much fun to watch… seems like they're always smiling and having fun and relaxed, but they do everything right… or at least the come close to doing everything right… not many strikeouts… lots of walks, hits, and putting the ball in play….

It seems like a lot of the competition has trouble with knowing where to throw the ball… situational stuff… not always an athletic problem… a thinking ahead problem Throwing the ball around and giving up extra bases because of that has not been an issue for Grantsburg.

What I'm getting at is there are some pretty fantastic coaches working with the team and it starts with Don Bjelland and Steve Johnson. They have a lot of differences, but they both know the game and have a knack for teaching it. Then it moves down to the "minor leagues" and those teams are staffed with coaches who care and are also knowledgeable in the basics and fundamentals of the game. It is truly a great system in Grantsburg with parents and coaches who really care a lot about this sport and the ones playing it.

Congratulations on a fantastic REGULAR season… *the real season starts now.

Every year the fine people at WCMP and WXCX radio turn their station over to seniors from area high schools. Grantsburg's night was last night and Brent Myers, Carissa Skifstad and McKenzie Ryan participated and if you follow the link you'll have the opportunity to witness a few minutes of that night..

(By the way… the other girl -she's standing up- is Keri Fairbanks who, if you follow high school sports on the radio, you might know from her behind the scenes work at the station during HS games [I thank her as I sign off... and occasionally make her talk... which she hates]… she does a fantastic job without much attention)

Grantsburg Pirate ballers Brent Myers and Trevor Thompson aren't done with basketball quite yet. They have been named to the Wisconsin Basketball Coaches' Association's All-Star game. They will be playing together down in Madison one more time.

There is a charity tied into this all-star game so please check out the link and consider sponsoring Brent and/or Trevor.

Grantsburgers going strong in Winona

Winona State All-American Mollie Bjelland hit a grand slam in game one and freshman teammate Michelle Lund pitched a three hit shut out in game two of the doubleheader that took place on Sunday against Moorehead State. Michelle is now 5-0 and Mollie is batting .338 with six home runs.

Winona State is 20-3 on the season (they started their season February 18 and played a bunch of games in Florida, too… here's their schedule).

We caught up with Brian Thill, a Webster native, who will be competing at Nationals for UW-Stevens Point in the pentathalon!
