John and Leo Chenal were honored at the All-State football banquet this past Sunday in Green Bay. The event was held at the Lambeau Field Atrium.
Sixty-five young men were chosen as all-state recipients by the Wisconsin Football Coaches Association (WFCA). Here is a list of the honorees. You may recognize a couple other names on that list; Kobe Berghammer, the incredible quarterback from Cumberland and Cody Ince a terrific lineman from Unity who will be playing for the Iowa Hawkeyes next season. Brady Redwine from Elk Mound was also honored as a running back. Grantsburg defeated all three of those teams during the season/postseason. Interestingly, the one team Grantsburg lost to, Amherst, had no representation on the list.
Wisconsin Badger head coach, Paul Chryst, was on hand and delivered the keynote address.
John Chenal, who will be attending Wisconsin next year as a preferred walk-on (one of only six players with that designation) was the only player to win All-State honors on both sides of the ball. Running back and middle linebacker.
Leo Chenal, who has committed to Wisconsin on full scholarship, received his award as an inside linebacker.
It’s an amazing accomplishment for these two athletes. Considering there are approximately 22,000 high school football players in the state of Wisconsin, John and Leo were two of the best. Not only have they helped Grantsburg achieve some great successes the past few years in football, they are a key part of the basketball team that is 14-2 this season.
Congratulations, John, Leo and family!
