Football team looks to conference play

Things did not go as the Pirates planned tonight against Cumberland. The Beavers ran wild against the Pirates in the first half amassing a 35-6 halftime lead. Grantsburg outscored Cumberland in the second half 14-7, but the damage had been done. The final was 42-20

For a time in the third quarter the clock went to running time as Cumberland opened up a 42-6 lead.

This season marks the fourth season in a row that Grantsburg has started 0-2.

But, there were some definite bright spots for the guys in purple…

It appeared there were no injuries tonight which is important since so many guys are already on the sidelines with various injuries, though if the stars align, the Pirates will get three starters back into the lineup next week.

Joe Gaffney made his offensive debut (I think he got in last week, but didn't carry the ball). His first carry went for a ten yard touchdown, his second was a big gainer (24 yards if I remember correctly) and his third carry also ended in the end zone. He is something special… and he's a good guy. I hope he can find the field more often as we head into conference play.

Connor Myers had a 69 yard run and was tackled just short of the goal line. I thought the sophomore got in, but the official said it was just short. Devan Christianson finished it off with Grantsburg's first touchdown of the season.

I think Daniel Larsen has done a pretty good job filling in for the injured Brent Myers at the quarterback position.

The Pirates have Unity next. I think that is a winnable game for the Pirates, though Unity has a TON of seniors on the roster (14… so maybe not quite 2000lbs., but still… a lot). The Eagles lost last week to St. Croix Central, but won tonight's game versus Birchwood/Weyerhauser 24-8.

I personally still think the Pirates can reach their goal of making the playoffs this year, but it starts with Unity.
