Pep rally and fan bus info

Posted in Events, Posted by Bob, Radio, Volleyball | No Comments »

Hey all you Pirate supporters here are a couple things you might want to consider…

Thursday morning at 8:30 there will be a pep session for the state-bound volleyball team. These pep rallies are always very well done and are fun to go to. The public is more than welcome to attend.

There will be a fan bus (or two?) leaving Grantsburg Friday morning. Check with the high school office for departure times and prices.

Tickets to the state tournament are $8.00 and will be available at the high school office starting at 8:00 am Monday morning.

Grantsburg’s first match from the Resch Center in Green Bay will be Friday, November 6th at 1:00 pm. If you cannot make it over to the city by the bay please tune in to 105.7 WXCX. I also know the WIAA will stream video from the match and I’ll get that website to you in a different post.

Way to go Pirates!!!

Here’s the play-by-play of the sectional final match with Melrose-Mindoro.

Grantsburg heading to state

Posted in Posted by Bob, State, Volleyball | No Comments »

After winning an anti-climactic match, the Grantsburg volleyball team is heading back to state.

The Pirates won easily 25-14, 25-6, 25-12. At times it looked like the Pirates opponent, Melrose-Mindoro, would rather have been trick-or-treating than playing the high flying Pirates.

Grantsburg looked good all night and did not fall into a trap after such an emotional and physical win over the Washburn Castle Guards just a couple nights ago.

That sets up a meeting with unranked Laconia in the state semi-final. I’ll post more about Laconia at another time.

In other news… Wisconsin Heights, last year’s champion, was defeated tonight by Cuba City. It was a three set sweep by Cuba City which is a little surprising considering Wisconsin Heights was ranked fourth in the state while Cuba City was ranked second.

For those of you who are hoping to listen to the Webster vs. Glenwood City football game you can listen online here. Find the link that says “Listen Live” and you’ll be able to follow the Tigers in a big victory (hopefully).

Steven McKinley finished 56 overall and Webster finished in fourth place as a team (Jack Taylor for Webster finished 3rd overall).

Congratulations to all of those guys.

Girls CC results

Michelle Lund finished 55th and her teammate Angela Gaffney finished 59th representing Grantsburg well at the state cross country race in Wisconsin Rapids.

The Frederic girls’ team finished 7th overall with Sam Nelson finishing 19th and finishing first for the Vikings.

Congratulations, girls! Well done!!!

Good luck to all area teams today

Angela Gaffney, Michelle Lund, and Steven McKinley represent the Grantsburg Pirates at the state cross country tournament held today at Wisconsin Rapids.

Angela (Jr.) finished 33rd last year and Michelle Lund (Sr.) finished 61st. Steven McKinley (Sr.) finished 65th last year.

Also congratulations to the Webster boys (ranked 6th) and Frederic girls (ranked 13th) cross country teams as they both qualified as teams. Webster won state last year.

The Webster Tigers (ranked 8th in the state) take on Glenwood City (ranked 12th) this afternoon in the second game of the WIAA state playoffs. Webster beat the Northwood/Solon Springs Evergreens 42-0 on Tuesday to advance to this game today. Good luck, Tigers!

The Frederic Vikings play Shell Lake (ranked 7th in D7) in second round football action as well. The Vikings, though seeded lower than the Lakers, are hosting the game.

Finally, the Grantsburg volleyball team is traveling to Clear Lake to try and defend their sectional championship and make it back to the Resch Center in Green Bay for the second year in a row. The Pirates take on Melrose-Mindoro for that right.

Grantsburg is ranked number one in the state, Melrose-Mindoro was unranked and had a number two seed in the tournament (Mondovi was the number one seed).

You can listen to the broadcast of the volleyball match on 105.7 WXCX starting at 7pm. Go Pirates!!!

Clayton ousted

Co-West-Lakelanders, the Clayton Bears, lost to McDonnell Central last night in straight sets.

The Bears were runners-up in last year’s playoffs, losing to Catholic Central in straight sets.

Congratulations to the Clayton Bears on a terrific season!

Grantsburg is now the only representative from the West Lakeland conference still alive in the tourney.
