Grantsburg softball pre-season rankings

Posted in Coaches, Fastpitch, Posted by Bob, Softball | 1 Comment »

The lady Pirates already have a lot of people thinking about Goodman Diamond in Madison. The girls are ranked third in the division three coaches poll. I have a feeling this isn’t a big deal to the girls and a lot of that is because head coach Don Bjelland and assistant coach Steve Johnson are so good at prioritizing what is and is not important. Rankings are nice for a fan like me, but for a team it usually does nothing but distract.

You can be sure that when the Pirates take the field this year you’ll get what you have in the past… quality defense, aggressive hitting and unbelievable pitching.

Interesting note: Grantsburg not lost a regular season game since the first game in 2006… the year they won state. To find out all you’e ever want to about Grantsburg Fastpitch go to their homepage which is maintained by assistant coach Steve Johnson.

Dr. Bont on David Letterman (sort of)

Here is a video link to the David Letterman Show in which Dr. Bont was featured in a bit called "Guys who look like Dave" on March 10.

The segment starts at 11 minutes into the show (right after the first break).

Is sport overemphasized?

Boys and Girls All-conference announced

Posted in All Conference, Athletes, Boy's Basketball, Girl's Basketball, Posted by Bob | No Comments »

Here’s the article in the Sentinel.

Boys:
Brennan Olson (Luck)
Carson Giller (Luck)
Harry Severson (Luck)
Ben Larson (Grantsburg)
Trent Bonneville (Grantsburg)
Jason Jensen (Grantsburg)
Tyler Myers (Grantsburg)
Connar Goetz (Grantsburg)
Brady Flaherty (Unity)
Ryan Larson (SCF)
Gus Koecher (SCF)
Austin Elliott (Webster)

Honorable Mentions:
Charlie Brown (Siren)
Brennen Moose (Siren)
Zach Anderson (Frederic)
Ethan Cook (Frederic)
Cory Gephard (St. Croix Falls)

All five Grantsburg starters make All-conference… what an accomplishment! I don’t know if that has ever happened before (probably) but Grantsburg finished second in the conference. It shows that it was truly a team effort for those guys.

I feel like Siren sort of got snubbed with selections as they had a very good season and I thought that Charlie Brown definitely had a good enough season to warrant an All-conference selection.

 Girls:
Janey Emery (Siren)
Carley Emery (Siren)
Ashley Guevara (Siren)
Marissa Campeau (SCF)
Sarah Petznick (SCF)
Morgan Denny (Luck)
Taryn Pilz (Luck)
Rose Kopecky (Webster)
Michelle Gibbs (Webster)
Becca Milligan (Unity)
Becca Anderson (Frederic)
Kortney Morrin (Grantsburg).

Honorable mentions:
Meghan Baasch (Siren)
Jenny Benoy (SCF)
Megan Anderson (Frederic)
Gabrielle Witzany (Grantsburg)

I like the fact that Gab Witzany got an honorable mention. She had a good season and really played well at the end of the season.

I think the conference is going to be highly competitive for the next couple years as a lot of the players on this list are sophomores (Morrin, Carley Emery, Ashley Guevara, Michelle Gibbs) and Witzany is a freshman. I might have missed a couple younger players, but that would only strengthen my arguement.

Congratulations to the Emery sisters

Janey Emery (sr.) was awarded a spot on the All State team and Carley Emery was named as an honorable mention as a sophomore. Here’s the proof.

Congratulations to the Emery girls!.

The Rommy Awards

If you haven’t seen my column in the Sentinel this week, here’s a link to the online edition. The Rommys are a highly sought after award which are given to those who perform at the highest level. We’ve spared no expense to track down the most deserving players, coaches and fans to award the Rommys to.

Siren’s season is over

Posted in Girl's Basketball, Posted by Bob | No Comments »

First… congratulations to the Siren girls for a tremendous season and we wish Janey Emery and the rest of the senior class well as they have played their last game for the Dragons. Siren has a young team and could make another run or two in the next couple years.

The team was met by another very good team in Madison and though Siren was able to hang tough for three quarters they weren’t able to make any headway into the 13-0 first quarter they allowed St. Mary Central to get.

The final score was 49-34.

Here is a link to the live blog that WisSports was updating during the game. He mentions a couple things that I also mentioned during the broadcast. The first being the constant imploring of the Siren fans to take three pointers by girls who aren’t usually the ones to take them. At times the crowd seemed downright angry that the girls weren’t launching threes. The second is the cow bell guy from Siren… I’d really like to shake that guy’s hand because he ROCKS that cow bell.

Here is a link to that stats from the game.

Heading to Madison

Posted in Girl's Basketball, Posted by Bob, Radio, State | No Comments »

I’m about to leave for Madison and wanted to give you some info if you’re interested in following the games but aren’t able to make it to the state capitol.

Click here if you would like to follow the play-by-play online (just stats, no voice). You can monitor any state game this way, if you’re that in to it.

I will not be streaming the games because it costs too much money (the WIAA charges $100/game). You can listen to the games on air on 105.7 WXCX. A WIAA press release says the games will be streamed but they didn’t bother with specifics, such as where you can find it. There’s a rumor that this station will cover all the games and have live streaming.

You can also watch on TV if you get the Eau Claire local station WQOW.

Here’s a live blog for you to monitor what others are saying about the tournament.

Finally here’s a Siren team capsule courtesy of WisSports.net
