The rain was sporadic as Grantsburg worked it’s way into the sectional final game by defeating Spring Valley/Plum Creek 4-1 on Friday. The Pirates had the Arm, as in sophomore Michelle Lund, working for them. The Arm struck out 13 batters and made a couple more plays in the field as Grantsburg defeated the Cardinals in the sectional semi-final game.

With that win Grantsburg moved to 18-0 on the season. Undefeated. Again. How on earth did they do that?

Didn’t they know that they lost Mollie and Jamie? How could they replace them? Didn’t they realize that Miranda and Lindsey no longer played on their team?

Yeah, they knew, but it was their time, their year. Teams always lose seniors, what were they going to do, throw in the towel. Not these girls. There were new seniors and they had an opportunity and they seized it.

The battle to decide who would move on to state looked like it might be one for the ages. It turned out to be something less than that. They ran into a team that put the bat on the ball while also being disciplined at the plate. Grantsburg would not score a run in the game where the sun seemed to only shine on the opposition, the Park Falls Cardinals. There were errors and miscues to be sure for the Pirates, but they showed the signs of a great team by not ever giving up.

Grantsburg gave up 12 runs in that game. They had given up 15 in the previous eighteen games. What a year! They were in the final eight teams in division 3. They had a great year and carved out their place in the history of Pirate Fastpitch.

The 2008 season is over, but somewhere on the edges of town a young girl picks up a glove and a ball and looks for someone to play catch with. The legacy of Grantsburg Fastpitch.
